Risks of Ultrasonic Liposuction
Dec 15th, 2008 | By | Category: LiposuctionUltrasonic assisted liposuction, also called ultrasonic liposuction, has become less popular by surgeons in the United States have are aware of the risks and complications. Most experienced plastic surgeons consider it less safe than other forms of liposuction procedures.
When the devices were sold in Europe, many doctors complained of complications and the items were removed from the market. Somehow, ultrasonic liposuction devices made their way to the United States, claiming to be medically sophisticated and the newest rage in the field of liposuction and weight reduction surgery. American surgeons stopped buying the product and the company eventually filed bankruptcy.
Ultrasonic liposuction has been related to blood clotting, peripheral nerve damage, and a build up of infected fluid. Peripheral nerve damage can occur in arms, legs, neck, or face and can far outweigh any benefits that may have been gained. One particular web site claims that the results are similar to that of traditional liposuction but the risks are increased. It explains that ultrasonic liposuction is not a replacement of other therapy, but an enhancement.
The Risks
In addition to bruising, scarring, and fluid retention, other risks can also be involved in ultrasonic liposuction. Even a very qualified plastic surgeon can run into complications and difficulties—it is very important that your doctor has admitting and treatment privileges at a hospital you are close to and familiar with. Some doctors have the privilege of admitting patients, but cannot treat them in that (or another) hospital. This is the type of information an informed patient needs to request, and be confident with the answers.
Some ultrasonic liposuction complications can occur even after the surgery has been performed. While the procedure itself may not cause tremendous scarring, the patient may end up with baggy or rippled skin, or brown spots caused by pigmentation changes. It is also possible that the procedure will result in an uneven appearance, requiring additional procedures to even out the appearance of the body.
Smoking, drinking, or taking drugs (whether over-the-counter or prescribed or illicit) can complicate ultrasonic liposuction surgery, as can uncontrolled diabetes; all can cause serious infection and/or inability to heal properly. Some drugs regulate the blood’s clotting ability; patients should not be taking any aspirin products prior to surgery.
There are also some rare and potentially life threatening complications to keep in mind when having any surgical procedure, including ultrasonic liposuction. These include dangers of local and general anesthesia, and damage to internal organs. It is also possible to suffer excessive IV fluid intake, excessive blood loss, hypothermia, and infection. Potential allergic reactions to medication, pneumonia, cardiac arrest, cardiac arrhythmias, brain damage if oxygen is deprived during anesthesia, seizures, and death are obviously the most important complication concerns.
